Samsung EX2F Review

The Samsung EX2F is a compact camera which has great optics and a host of features in one neat package.

………………………………………………………………………………..

Overview

The Samsung EX2F joins some quality cameras from this manufacturer. The excellent optics also enable fast shooting at low light levels. Like its other counterparts in the Samsung range it has a number of familiar goodies, like the various in camera filter effects, easy to use dials and controls, and excellent quality of digital image.

Samsung EX2F

The Samsung EX2F has a good build quality with a magnesium alloy shell covered in plastic. It comes in black or white and perhaps the white model is a little more funky and attractive.

The controls are normal for a compact camera of this type but unusually it has two dials on the top of the body. One dial is for the normal types of exposure control setting and the other is for different types of shooting, single shot, multi shot, burst shot and so forth.

Samsung EX2F

This is an interesting idea and makes one think that the user of this camera might be someone who would be flicking from one shooting mode to another very quickly, so something to consider if you are such a person, since changing to say rapid fire mode on most cameras requires reference to the menu and the screen back to see what you are doing. This dial also facilitates self timer which again is important to some who like to do self portraits and so on.

Samsung EX2F

One of the main good points this camera has is a 1.4 aperture lens. A lens which allows this amount of light in is always going to be better for shooting in low light conditions. The optics made by Schneider are of excellent quality as one might expect from a company that has been making optics for many years. With a lens like this you can use a fast shutter speed and not compromise on quality by using a lower ISO or film speed.

Samsung EX2F

The camera also has HD video at 1080 pixels and as this is fast becoming the standard for any camera of a decent price or quality. The still pictures offer different levels of resolution up to 12 megapixels which isn’t as high as some other offerings in this price range or less. However for professionals it has the ability to shoot in RAW and also RAW plus a JPEG and although this will take up a lot of space it also means you can have a totally uncompressed and unmanipulated image to play with.

Design and Control Features //

The design of the camera is perhaps not as slick as some others though it’s not a big camera and can be used one handed as needed. The build quality does give it a certain amount of robustness also.

As mentioned it has all the manual controls you may want plus the extra shooting style dial. This will be, for some, a definite reason for choosing it. The video offers stereo recording and also high speed filming for slow motion effects.

The swivel and tilt back is very useful where you want to shoot from an awkward position such as holding the camera above you and still see what you are doing.

Performance //

The camera performs well and the images are excellent. It has facial recognition software but this allows up to 20 faces which is great for group shots where you need to make sure the focus is spot on. Another really good extra is the neutral density filter. This type of filter allows you to reduce the amount of light through the lens and is used by film makers especially when shooting in very bright conditions.

As an example, for a close subject, you may want a longer exposure and in bright sunlight the neutral filter will allow the shutter speed to be lowered and allow a bigger aperture thus blurring out the background.

There are several filter effects that can be applied to the image in camera called Smart Filters, which allow such things as soft focus, cartoon effects, old film effects and so forth. As an additional plus point there is also an effect which allows you to combine two images into one, for some possibly funky special effects, and also for video you can have a still image running inside the video frame as a Picture in Picture.

Finally it has wireless capability for uploading your pictures to Facebook and Youtube, as well as anti shake technology and live panorama which many people like to use when taking photos.

For slightly more money than the Samsung EX2F, the Sony Cybershot RX100 offers 20 megapixel quality, a similar big aperture lens and many of the same features.

Who is it for?

This camera is most likely going to appeal to serious photographers or professionals who want something they can carry around in their pocket. The price tag is somewhere around £270 to £370 (December 2012) depending upon where you buy it.

At least two other cameras rival this in spec and price, as mentioned the Sony Cybershot RX100 and also the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 which might be worth considering.

Value for Money

This is a hard one, as it does pack an awful lot of features into a small camera and Samsung are a brand which has come out of nowhere to steal a huge slice of market share. The biggest downside is that it doesn’t have interchangeable lenses but none of its immediate rivals do, you would have to go to the Samsung NX100 to get that and that will cost you more. Overall it is quite pricey and perhaps one should consider the rivals like the Sony Cybershot RX100 before parting with your money.

Final thought

If you have the money and you like the camera, plus the handy controls then maybe with the fast lens and the extra features it has it’s worth a second look.
