Design & Control Features

There are few CMC´s that can boast the alluring design and exceptional build quality of the Samsung NX300. The attachable lenses might make this compact slightly bulky and front heavy, but the faux-leather shell makes handling reassuringly easy and topped with a smooth aluminium top plate it has a touch of sophistication to go with it.

The novice will be particularly pleased with how well the bright 3.31-inch AMOLED screen copes with broad daylight and has enough flex in its adjustable hinges to give you better viewing angles. You also have aperture priority which allows you to forget about f-stops and simply use the defocus/sharpen slider by dragging it onto the touchscreen from the side menu.

It´s makes life a whole lot easier for beginners learning the mode ropes and in most cases you can dispense with the hardware buttons.

For the enthusiast, the changeable lenses literally offer more scope to a camera that is already feature-rich in shooting modes although is chunkier than the Nikon 1-series. If you are using the lenses the NX300 doesn´t become the easy carry round DLSR you would hope for, but equipped with a 20.3MP sensor and capable of ripping of 8.6fps bursts you won´t often need the extra lens.

Samsung NX300

Boasting 105 detection points and picking out a total of 10 faces to auto-predict the correct settings, the advanced sensor can fix on your subject in just 0.08 seconds.

It´s sensor stats are pretty impressive too. Boasting 105 detection points and picking out a total of 10 faces to auto-predict the correct settings, the advanced sensor can fix on your subject in just 0.08 seconds. We are talking high-end specs in a mid-price camera here. The only thing the NX300 doesn´t do well is with the occasional RAW settings which sometimes feature barrel distortions.

Samsung NX300

Samsung has also expanded the ISO cap from 12800 to 25600 which is the same as the new Panasonic Lumix GF6, and the Korean giant continues to impress with its intuitive iFunction lens system. This Lens Priority function allows you to play with short to long field depth together with 14 scene modes which offer a variety of shot depending on your location and effect you want to create.

Streaking car headlights at night and blurring moving water is a dream made easy. In essence, beginners can rattle off professional looking results without barely trying.

Performance

For a sub-£600 digital snapper, you will be hard pressed to find a more superior performer than the Samsung NX300. Largely thanks to its integrated smart shooting modes, the outstanding image quality gives you natural, vibrant colours although the kit lens doesn´t always make the most of the cameras high pixel count.

Samsung NX300

It carries a brand new chip which slashed autofocus to a CMC record 0.08 seconds to size-up your subject and let you get a shot away

But digital cameras are judged by how well their sensors perform in the field, and although Samsung´s latest digital features the same 20.3 res lens as its NX-brethren, it does carry a brand new chip which slashed autofocus to a CMC record 0.08 seconds to size-up your subject and let you get a shot away. You won´t miss many hurried or action shots.

Samsung NX300

Most mid-range CMC´s struggle in low-light, but the NX300 delivers surprising results that are absent of noise or grainy images up to an ISO 800 setting. Anything above this and colours begin to appear flat and the is a noticeable loss of detail.  To beginners that may not sound too hot, but experienced shooters will appreciate just how impressive the NX300 is.

The sensitive touchscreen makes the NX300 extremely easy to use and with its well-built tilting mechanism gives you superior shooting angles and is made to last for years

Who is it for?

The NX300 will appeal to everyone from beginners to professionals who want a versatile camera that delivers a high-end performance for an attractive price point

Value for money?

Given the NX300 is bundled with a weight of high-end specs and delivers a performance to match for both novs and pros, £600 for the Samsung is an absolute snip.

Final thought

Samsung has a habit of pushing the tech boundaries into the mainstream consumer market and the NX300 compact digital is no exception. Their rivals will be ripping their lenses out!  Aesthetically eye-catching, this stylish snapper looks more than its £599.99 price point suggests and when you also consider the NX300 delivers a high-end performance you will take great delight to know you have landed yourself an absolute bargain.

The sensitive touchscreen makes the NX300 extremely easy to use and with its well-built tilting mechanism gives you superior shooting angles and is made to last for years. The iFunction feature is handy for using as a central control and the 14 scene modes produce excellent results even professionals will be happy with.

The only slight niggles are the changeable lenses are a little bulky and heavier than some rival cameras, but the 20.3 megapixel sensor will see you through most occasions – even in low light. To compare price against performance, we have no problem recommended the Samsung NX300 to all-comers.
